Sergio Jalil
Board Member and Diaspora Engagement
Mr. Jalil is the executive director of CELIBAL (Latin American Center for Lebanese Studies). He holds B.A. degrees in International Relations from Catholic University of de Córdoba, Argentina, and a master’s degree in Arab studies and Foreign Policy from the Center of Contemporary Arab Studies (Graduate School of Foreign Service) at Georgetown University (Washington DC, USA) with a Major in International Politics of the Middle East and a minor in International Economic Development.
He is a member of the Argentine National Academy of the Arts and Sciences of Communications and actively linked to several study and academic groups focusing on the Middle East in the US, Lebanon and Latin America.
He is a Fellow at the Think Tank of the Global International Studies Program of Salamanca University in Spain and a professor in the Master’s in Global Studies teaching courses in Nationalism and Ethnic conflicts in the Middle East, and Global International Security in the Middle East, and History of International Relations in the Middle East. Also has taught about Syria and Lebanon at the Catholic University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, seminars on the Middle East at the Anahuac Mayab University in Mexico and was invited to several conferences organized by the Catholic University in Montevideo, Uruguay. He has been also invited professor in Comillas University, and Complutense University (Spain) and several universities throughout Argentina in the cities of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Rosario, Tucuman and Mendoza.
He has been an active member of Lebanese Diaspora organizations since the 1980’s becoming the First elected President of the World Lebanese Cultural Union Youth and organized four international conventions in Uruguay (1986), Dominican Republic (1987), Brazil (1990) and Mexico (1992) and the first organized tour group of 360 Lebanese descendants from around the world in Lebanon in 1993. He served as Vice President of the World Lebanese Cultural Union (1992- 1994)
From 1990 until 2005 he worked at the International Business Development Department of Bank Audi (USA) where he was Senior Vice President, before retiring to direct his private Business Advisory firm and manage his own private companies in Argentina, Brazil and the USA in the areas of ecofriendly fuel retail, real estate development and hospitality business (hotels, temporary apartment rentals, and gastronomy)
From 1994 until 1999 he was a Senior Advisor to the President of Argentina in Middle East Policy and organized the first ever trip of a Latin American President (Carlos Menem of Argentina) to Lebanon.
His academic interests and research concentrate on the studies of minorities, nationalism, conflict resolution and geopolitics focusing the Middle East with and has vast experience and concentration in subjects related to Lebanon and its Diaspora.
In 2013 he founded CELIBAL (Latin American Center for Lebanese Studies) and created the ACADEMIA LIBANESA ONLINE, a platform that provided courses about Lebanon and the Middle East in Spanish and is the author of courses on the Lebanese Identity and Introduction to Geopolitics of the Middle East.
